I often talk about owning a Corgi on a budget. Today, I thought I’d break down how much we spend each year on Winston.
- £250 paid for Winston (we rescued him)
- £40 per month insurance
- £20 every two months for nutritional powder
- £40 per month on food
- £100 teeth clean / year
- £60 groom / twice per year
- £300 for flea and worming / year
- £50-£100 on toys or harness / year
- £300+ on dog sitters while we travel / year
- £60 on poo bags / year
That takes our annual total to roughly £2,050+ per year.
Does this surprise you? What are your costs like?

Do you let your dog sleep in your bed? 💤
It's cosy, but also a little unhygienic, to have dogs sleeping in bed. Sleeping next to your dog can relieve stress and anxiety because the dog’s presence activates the oxytocin hormone. This chemical reaction helps lower blood pressure. Therefore, many people can benefit from a dog sleeping in bed.
However, dogs can bring fleas, ticks and in rare cases pathogenic bacteria to bed, such as ringworm, tapeworms, and parasites. Ew!
Also, dust mites love dogs sleeping in bed since they feed on dead cells and hair, which will increase with your puppy in your bed.
Of course, life is short and cuddling up with our doggos is the best! Just make sure you're giving your bed a thoroughly good clean, regularly, if they're going to make a habit of sleeping with you.

The magic of the sniffari 🐽
Physical exercise is important to keep Corgis trim and healthy. But you know what's also incredibly important?
Allowing them plenty of opportunities to sniff.
I had no idea about the importance of sniffing for dogs when I first got Winston. In fact, when he'd pull on his leash and spend lots of time sniffing at seemingly e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g, I got a little annoyed. A little impatient.
Then I learned that dogs have up to 2 billion scent receptors in their nose and that 15-20 mins of sniffing is roughly equivalent to a one-hour walk in terms of mental stimulation and enrichment 🤯
This is so important to your Corgi's overall health and wellbeing. As well as letting them sniff lots when they're out on a walk, you can play indoor scent games (we love playing "hide the carrot" with Winston!).

Bringing a Corgi home is the most exciting thing ever, but it’s also a lot to handle. Here's our ultimate guide to help you puppy-proof your life, get all the right gear and find a solid routine to make the transition easy for both of you.
🦊 Viral corgi rescue video is a tale in misinformation
Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll have seen the now-viral video of a group of seven dogs that allegedly went missing in China walking back home to their village, reuniting with owners who'd been searching for them for days.
Unfortunately, the story is false. Reports from CNN and Chinese media revealed the dogs were local pets following a German Shepherd in heat, not escapees from the dog meat trade.
There was no theft, no escape, and no cross-country trek.
Well-meaning volunteers and social media users layered unverified details onto the clip and AI-generated content presented the escape story as fact. Read more here.
